ABOUT ME

'Kain Baik' roughly means nice cloth (cloth nice) in the language of Malaysia (Malay). Having previously spent some time living in Malaysia, I came to appreciate the craftmanship that went in to creating such vibrant designs by marking out the design with wax and dying. This process is repeated a number of times to achieve the desired distribution of colour onto the fabric. Often metal prints are used to print the wax on to the fabric, and other times the design is drawn with the wax freehand.

African wax prints are created using much the same technique.

I also like to use other printed cotton fabrics and and to combine these with plain coloured fabrics to create something that is pleasing to the eye.

Unique Designs

Materials are sourced and used in applications where they might not have been used before.

In my face coverings, I try to use fabrics that make the face covering more friendly and welcoming by adopting brighter colours and patterns that might promote a smile rather than a frown in the supermarket or on the bus.

Quality Craftmanship

All of my projects are made by hand using traditional techniques.

All sewing is done by hand or on a sewing machine.

All cutting out is done by hand.
